Fupenzi represents a wild Asian variety of the raspberry, recently celebrated as a superfood due to its high flavonoid content. Fupenzi has been recorded as a medicinal substance for 1,500 years, with a general emphasis on liver and kidney tonic qualities, as well as an ability to astringe essence and control dribbling urination—hence its name Fupen, “Covering Up the Bed Pan.” It features as a potent food grade ingredient in the traditional essence tonic Wuzi Yanzong Wan, a Song dynasty remedy for premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, impotence and infertility. Fupenzi can thus be considered a safe herb for prostate health, sexual function and fertility, especially at a time when Sangpiaoxiao (Mantis egg case), an effective essence astringent from animal sources, has become exceedingly rare and expensive.
The herb is harvested in early summer when the color of the fruit changes from green to yellow. Traditional growing areas for Fupenzi are the provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian in Southeast China. Since China’s Eastern coastline has become one of the most developed areas in Asia, Classical Pearls sources wild-crafted Fupenzi from the pristine mountain region at the border between the Southern provinces of Hunan and Guizhou.
